Following a loss to rival SM South on a buzzer-beater last Tuesday, the boys JV basketball team returned and edged out a win against rival Rockhurst 48-45. After the first quarter, the Lancers trailed by one. By half, SM East led 28-17. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Lancers were up 39-36. The Lancers had four fouls in the second half and the Hawklets had nine. SM East went seven for ten on free throws throughout the game. The team distributed the ball to all players, as all eight team members contributed points to their victory. Junior Charlie Carroll and sophomore Carter Brock led all scorers with eight points each. After shooting 70% from the free throw line and all players scoring, SM East defeated Rockhurst 48-45 last Friday, Jan. 27. This was the boys JV basketball team’s third consecutive year winning against Rockhurst.
Notoriously one of the biggest rivalries of the year, the East vs. Rock game is known for the largest crowds and highest energy on the court. “Just entering the building you could feel how awesome the atmosphere was going to be,” said senior Charlie Duske, leading the student section chants for both the JV and varsity games.
The Lancers’ next game will be played on Feb. 3 against Olathe North at 5:15 p.m. at Olathe North.
