SMSD held its annual band festival where four schools from the district come and play musical pieces they’ve worked on. To begin the ceremony, the SM West Band director, Kevin Hupe, spoke to the audience about the festival. The first school to perform their music was SM North. The musical pieces played were “Yosemite Autumn” by Mark Camphouse and “Come Sweat Death” by Johann Sebastian Bach. After SM North performed, the next school to perform was SM West. They played the pieces “Rephygeration” by Todd Staler and “Courtly Airs and Dance” by Rob Nelson. After SM West was done performing, then came SM Northwest’s turn. They played the pieces “Lauds (Praise High Day)” by Ron Nelson and “Oh, Henry!” by Ryan Nowlin.
The next school to perform was SM South. The band played the music pieces: “Guadalcanal March” by Richard Rogers and “Armenian Dances – Part 1” by Alfred Reed. The final band to play was SM East Band. The musical pieces that SM East performed were “Themes from Green Bushes” by Percy Aldridge and the other piece was “Symphonic Dance No. 3” by Clifton Williams. After SM East played, the SM East conductor, Alex Toepfer, thanked the audience for attending the festival.
The next band festival is April 7 at the SM Northwest Auditorium.
