The SM East girls varsity soccer team defeats Lawrence 3-1 at SMAC, continuing their record of 12-0-1 so far this season. As of now the girls varsity team is ranked second in the state of Kansas. In the first half, freshman Stella Harris takes a corner kick to junior Lauren Mercer who heads the ball into the goal, scoring the first point of the game. With 20 seconds left in the first half, Lawrence takes a free kick, but is unsuccessful after the goalie, junior Bella Tilgner, blocks it. In the start of the second half junior Lauren Mercer scores again, earning her team an additional point. Shortly after, Lawrence scores their first goal making the score 2-1. SM East scores again with 17:01 left in the game. 3 minutes later Lawrence gets a free kick on goal. Coach Jamie Kelley yells at the referee for stopping the clock while the two teams set up for the free kick. The referee calls a yellow card on Kelley before starting the game again. Lawrence misses the free kick and the Lancers defeat the Chesty Lions 3-1.
The girls varsity soccer team has their next game on Thursday, May 7 against SM North at 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex.
