With a majority of students spending 6 hours at Rockhurst high school waiting in line for tickets, entering the gym hours early, and watching both the JV and varsity games, the boys varsity basketball team falls to rival Rockhurst High School 45-38 in one of the biggest games of the season, losing the team’s three-year winning streak. With the popular “Beat Rock” shirts made by the student store, SM East students filled the stands with a limited admission of 325 tickets.
Down by 1, the Lancers end the first quarter 13-12. The Lancers take the lead for the first time in the game during the second quarter, 21-18. They lose their lead to end the first half 24-23. At half, seniors Julia Fillmore and Charlie Duske participate in a shooting competition. Unable to regain the lead, Rockhurst led the entire third quarter. With three-pointers by senior George Kopp, the Lancers decreases the gap down to four points with 50 seconds left in the game. Fouling which allowed Rockhurst to shoot free throws, the Lancers lost to Rock 45-38 at the final whistle, breaking their three-year winning streak against their rivals.
The Lancers’ next game will be played on Jan 31 against Gardner Edgerton at 7:00 p.m. at home. At the game, the Lancer Dancers will debut their nationals hip-hop routine at halftime.
