On Friday, Oct. 21, Chemistry teachers Steven Appier, Jerrod Bardwell and Susan Hallstrom and their IB and AP Chemistry students hosted East’s 25th Mole Day. Around 200 chemistry students attended and received 6.02 extra credit points, according to Bardwell.
The IB and AP Chemistry students started setting up for Mole day at 4:30 a.m. before the Chemistry 1 students began showing up around 5:45-6:02 a.m. according to junior and Chemistry 2 student Autumn Sun.
“Mole Day started at 6:02 a.m with the bang of a hydrogen balloon exploding,” said junior and Chemistry 2 student Margot Beaver. “We went over the 10 Comolements and introduced the rest of what we had planned.”
Students gathered in the cafeteria for juice, donuts and bagels before participating in games like whack-a-mole, cornmole, bag toss, Super Mario Bros, ping pong and musical chairs according to sophomores and Chemistry 1 students Smith Mckinney and Emmy Barrett.
Sun said that all of the chemistry students really seemed to be enjoying the fun games.
“My favorite part was musical chairs because I was super close to winning,” sophomore and Chemistry 1 student Maggie Wells said. “I was one round away from being in the final round and I thought it was super fun to see everyone watching and cheering each other on.”
Bardwell said he brought Nintendos and projected the Super Mario Bros game onto a screen in the cafeteria for everyone to watch, to go with the Super Molio theme. Mckinney enjoyed watching the game at the end of the event.
“My favorite part of Mole Day was when we got together and four people played the video game Super Smash Bros at the end,” said Mckinney.
Hallstrom’s classes won the competition earning the most enrichment points between the three chemistry teachers. Sophomore Jack Barnes earned points to settle the tie-breaker sudden death round between Hallstrom and Appier.
“I would do Mole Day again because it’s such a fun tradition,” said Sun. “People get so competitive and that competitiveness brings all the classes together. It brings the teachers closer with the students and the students with other students.”
