Prom Dress Debate: Bridesmaid/Easter prom dresses are more affordable and overall cuter than traditional prom dresses.

Prom season is in full swing — dinner reservations are being made and after party themes are being decided. I have been spending any spare minutes between classes scrounging the internet for the perfect.

After scrolling through different clothing websites like Hello Molly and Princess Polly, along with searching on TikTok, the current trend of bridesmaid and “Easter” dresses has caught my attention.

Bridesmaid and Easter dresses tend to be more casual than the flashy and poofy prom dresses with weird designs that you would see in movies. The dresses range from satin fabric to floral designs with vibrant colors as well. Not to mention, bridesmaid and Easter dresses are far more comfortable and affordable.

Non-traditional dresses like bridesmaid and Easter dresses are cuter and less expensive than the big, sparkly prom dresses that cost hundreds of dollars.

I don’t understand how someone can spend hundreds of dollars on a dress they are only going to wear once. Seems like a waste of money to me. But you can wear Easter and bridesmaid dresses again for graduation and birthday parties — not to mention they aren’t $500 and borderline ugly.

While Easter dresses are getting bashed by influencers on TikTok for being too casual and not fitting into the prom stereotype of unnecessary extravagance, I would much rather wear a cute pastel floral dress than one that looks like it would belong at the Met Gala.

Bridesmaid and Easter prom dresses are also much easier to find when all you have to do is search online for a few dresses you like, add them to your cart and check out. When looking for more classic prom dresses, you have to go to a store filled with hundreds of dresses, try on options to find only one dress you remotely like. And more often than not you still have to get it altered anyways.

For someone who doesn’t want to spend their weekend dedicated to dress shopping and spending way more money than I have to for something I’m never going to wear again, I think I’ll just stick to my bridesmaid and Easter prom dresses.
