District Proposes School Changes

Superintendent Gene Johnson reported to the district Board of Education on Monday evening at SM West. Dr. Johnson proposed 11 changes that will be voted on by the Board on Nov. 8 at SM North after a series of community meetings.

Johnson proposed closing two middle schools, Antioch and Mission Valley, after the current school year leaving each high school with one feeder middle school. He also proposed reassigning Brookwood Elementary to the South area from the East area. Also, the portion of the Trailwood Elementary boundary currently in the East area would be moved to the South area, if the proposal is accepted.

District officials hope the plan will save the SMSD $3 million annually.
