Winter Sports Update

Wrestling:

With four wrestlers placing in the Johnson County Community College tournament, Coach Ben Sutherlin’s first year at SM East is going rather swimmingly. Last week Michael Aldrich placed first in a tournament in Topeka, and Marshall Green won the best wrestler award. The team’s next match is this Wednesday against Blue Valley High.

Boys Swim:

The boys swim team is training for their meets against Shawnee Mission South on Thursday and Blue Valley North on Tuesday. The next two meets are against big rivals. This weeks practices will be very intense, as the boys hope to defeat both rivals.

Bowling:

East has its first meet at College Lanes this Tuesday. The Lancers are going up against Washington and Olathe East.

The Boys’ and Girls’ squad are both suffering; the Boys’ from losing bowlers and the Girls’ are struggling with depth. There’s still no clear Varsity squad for either side.

Girls Basketball

After a win against SM North on Friday, the girls varsity team improved to 1-4 on the season. The sixth annual Free Throw took place last Thursday, and Hannah Nick was the overall winner in the girls division with 251 free throws in 20 minutes. The money, to be counted Monday, will benefit the Booster Club. Girls Varsity plays Tuesday vs. Olathe East and Friday vs. SM West.

Boys Basketball

The team started the season slow and took seventh in the Championship Showdown Tournament in December. On Friday, the Lancers rallied from a 12 point deficit against SM North to win their fourth consecutive game. They will go into Tuesday’s game against Olathe East 5-2.
