Winter Sports Update

Boys Basketball

The varsity team ended a four-game losing streak on Feb. 10 with a two point win over Olathe South. Three days later, the team finished the game against SM Northwest in the first victory by 20 points or more since the season opener. Only two weeks and four games are left until post-season play begins.

Wrestling

At the Sunflower League Tournament over the weekend, Shawnee Mission East escaped with five podium finishes highlighted by a 1st place finish by senior Marshall Green. Encored by a third place finish by junior Michael Bamford. The next tournament for the Lancer wrestlers will be the Sunflower League Regionals.

Girls Basketball

The girls varsity team is still battling injuries, and they are expected to pull up more sophomores and freshmen to play varsity. With only one win on the season and less than ten games to go, the Lancers must find a new approach to winning. They will play Tuesday at Olathe Northwest, who is 5-7. The Ravens are just as inconsistent as the Lancers, so it will be a fairly even matchup.

Bowling

Last week, the team had their senior night at College Lanes. Both teams placed fourth in the meet, with senior Mike Thibodeau taking third overall for the boys.

Coming up this week, JV has League on Tuesday, their last meet of the year at College Lanes. The Varsity teams travel to Districts at Park Lanes on Wednesday and League on Thursday. After this week, the team will only have one more meet, Regionals next Tuesday, this year.

Boys Swimming

The team qualified for 6A State, which is this Saturday and Sunday, February 20-21. 40 swimmers qualified for a State event. Three freshman swimmers earned state-qualified times. The team has been having serious practices to prepare for state. The team is tapering all week which is when there is one intense practice at the start of the week than as the days go by it gets easier and easier with longer sleep.

“Tapering helps our times drop throughout the week,” swimmer Aidan Hense said.
