Wait, That’s a Holiday? Feb. 6th: “National Frozen Yogurt Day”

Whenever I’m with friends and we need something to do, it’s always, “Let’s get ice cream!” and never, “Let’s get frozen yogurt!” Growing up in Arizona with never-ending heat, froyo was basically a necessity.

So when I heard National Frozen Yogurt Day was coming up on Feb. 6, my mind was flooded with memories of my family and I enjoying our late night froyo on weekends. Now that I live in Kansas, I don’t see nearly as many local froyo places anymore.

When my friend and I decided to visit Yogurtini in the Plaza a couple days ago, I wasn’t expecting much. But with the 24 flavor options and a buffet of toppings, I instantly thought of my childhood.

We went straight for the flavors and tried any that sounded appetizing, from Pineapple Dole whip to Oreo. After five minutes of deliberation, I settled on the cotton candy and chocolate cheesecake froyo as a base and sprinkled Fruity Pebbles, strawberry boba, cookie dough and brownie batter on top.

Although the crunchy cereal, moist boba and chewy dough were a lot to take in at first, they somehow all mixed in flavorfully with the cotton candy and chocolate cheesecake froyo base. However, there are hundreds of topping combinations you can choose from — you’re sure to enjoy whatever concoction you invent.

Some like to stick with one flavor the whole way through. Not me. I like to mix and match different flavors like fruit and chocolate to enjoy a mix of unique tastes. The range from cookie dough to fruity boba created a delicious treat that I couldn’t stop eating. The sweet flavors instantly brought me back to Arizona, enjoying late night froyo runs with my sisters.

National Froyo day is something I wish I could celebrate everyday. Yogurtini has a cute, simple set-up with many places to sit and a wide aisle to craft your froyo dish. You can take your time to choose what you want in an open space, which saved me from having to quickly decide on my dish like at a typical ice cream shop.

I enjoyed my experience way more than I have in past ice cream runs. I was able to switch up my toppings and flavors I would usually get with ice cream and celebrate one of my new favorite holidays.

After my newfound love for the dessert, I will definitely be marking my calendar to celebrate the holiday next year and returning to Yogurtini, or other nearby froyo shops like Peach Wave.
