Wait, That’s A Holiday? Feb. 23: “National Toast Day”

At 7 a.m. sharp, my morning routine this week has been to prepare a toast breakfast feast in honor of National Toast Day.

National Toast Day — a holiday I didn’t even know existed until it popped up on my Instagram explore page last week — is Thursday, Feb. 23. As soon as I heard there was a whole day dedicated to toast, I knew I had to try out some unique recipes for myself.

When I think of making toast, one immediately pops into my mind — avocado toast. For my avocado toast, I decided to use six ingredients: a slice of powerseed bread, a ripe avocado, lemon juice, Trader Joe’s Everything Bagel seasoning, salt and pepper. This toast was the most consistent in flavor and had a tart aftertaste from the lemon which I enjoyed. I rated this toast a 8/10, because while I enjoyed the zesty lemon and the Everything Bagel seasoning, it was pretty predictable.

If you have a sweet tooth or are looking for a sweetness-overload, you’ll surely enjoy this next breakfast: PB banana toast. A piece of powerseed bread, organic peanut butter, a sliced banana and some blueberry granola all topped with a light sprinkle of cinnamon. Biting into the toast and tasting the overpowering banana taste, the cinnamon and peanut butter added the perfect amount of unnatural sweetness to balance out the banana. The blueberry granola added a subtle crunch that I didn’t realize was needed until trying it. The toast was a 7/10.

I didn’t intentionally leave the best for last, but that happened to be the case for my final piece of toast. I’ve been seeing freshman Lily Tucker rave about her signature toast recipe on social media for a month, so I had to try it. This toast consisted of a slice of powerseed bread, avocado, sliced tomatoes, onions, a fried egg, buffalo sauce, garlic salt, salt and pepper. This toast was easily the most flavorful of the three I tried, especially with the kick to it from the buffalo sauce. I rated Tucker’s toast a 10/10 and couldn’t stop myself from devouring it within seconds. If you are looking for a savory and surprisingly tangy toast, this one is for you.

In honor of National Toast Day, head to your kitchen and try some new recipes for toasts. You may find yourself surprised and in love with some of the new and different combinations like me.
