Varsity Girls Soccer Updates

Current Placement

  • Following its most recent 3-1 win over Lawrence High at Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex on May 5, the girls' varsity soccer team is tied for first in Sunflower League. SM East is tied with Mill Valley, both with records of 5-0-1.
  • SM East varsity soccer is first in the Class 6A East Regional Season. The team has a record of 12-0-1, with 51 goals for and only 5 goals against. The team has the most seed points of all 19 teams in the East region.
  • The second-place team in the Class 6A East Regional Season is Mill Valley, with a record of 12-1-1.
  • For the Week 7 High School Girls Soccer Rankings, the team is in third place, trailing behind St. James (5A) and Bishop Carroll (4A). 
  • The team was the Hyvee Team of the Week last week.

Top Performers

  • Junior Mia Mosher is the top goal scorer for the team. The second top goal scorer is junior Lauren Mercer, even after missing two games due to a shoulder injury in the first game of the season.
  • The defense and goalkeeping has only allowed 5 goals against themselves, this is tied with Mill Valley for the least amount of goals allowed in the Class 6A East Regional Season.

Upcoming Competitions

  • According to head varsity coach Jamie Kelly, the team’s next competition every day is the next team they play. Instead of looking ahead, the team focuses on one game at a time.
  • The team will face SM North on April 23. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at SM North’s Stadium.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Factors like burnout, AP testing and injuries have lessened practice size and messed up the consistency of practices, according to junior Bella Tilgner.
  • A strength of the team is its ability to score early and to play against the wind, according to junior Bella Tilgner.

Injury

  • Senior captain Louisa Holzbeierlein collided with junior goalkeeper Bella Tilgner and an Olathe South player, resulting in a knee injury involving tendons in her knee and problems with her soft tissue. This injury has caused Holzbeirelein to be out of two games so far, and practices since the collision, she hopes to be back for playoffs.
  • Senior Mak Terril strained her quad and was out for the game against Olathe South and Olathe North. She returned to practicing on May 4, but had no contact. 

Other

  • Senior Night will be before the SM North game on May 7 at SM North’s Stadium. Senior Night will honor seniors Stella Beaver, Luciana Mendy, Campbell Brinton, Mak Terril, Louisa Holzbeierlein, Sophie Danker, Kate Lucas, Morgan Beedle, Addison Stover and Ellie Moilanen. 
  • For Senior Night, underclassmen design the T-Shirts worn before the game and during the school day. This year, junior Molly Scott designed the shirts and underclassmen split the payment between each other, the seniors not having to pay.

    What a clever trick for roasting vegetables evenly! I'm definitely going to try this next Sunday dinner. We always pair our roast with a light, crisp salad, often featuring what we jokingly call a 'çeşme escort' dressing.
