Trivia Time: How the STUCO special events committee plans Trivia night

After two months of brainstorming categories and questions, the Student Council’s special events committee is ready to host East’s annual Trivia Night on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.

There’s a $25 sign-up fee for each team of up to five members and each team must be sponsored by a teacher. The winners will receive half of the money donated in the form of a gift card, and the other half will go to a charity of the winning team’s choice.

The process for planning Trivia Night starts with brainstorming the categories that the questions will come from. The categories and questions can be about anything such from government to music, and they are not revealed until Trivia Night. Planning for the event began in early December. The STUCO special events committee decided on categories by having each committee member come up with questions for one specific category. Then, they vote to select the best categories according to Sophomore and committee member Owen Andrews

“Each student gets a category and they have to come up with questions and then we decide which ones are gonna be harder questions,” senior and committee member Emma Kuhlman said.

After they decided on questions the members of the committee met again to discuss how to categorize the questions.

The cafeteria will have circular lunch tables in the middle, with the teams that signed up earlier sitting in front so they can see the questions better. The committee members will sit in front of the participants and read questions from a slideshow, according to Andrews.

The members of the committee also coordinate with the janitorial staff’s schedule to make sure that they don’t try to clean the cafeteria in the middle of Trivia Night.

“Coordinating with the janitors and just the promotional side in general can be really tedious” said Kuhlman

Last year, a team called the “Noble Gases” — consisting of current seniors Aanya Bansal, Autumn Sun, Claire Schudy, Ella Yun and Nina Yun — won the competition, beating 14 other teams. The teams played through 10 rounds before crowning a winner. This year a new winner will be crowned.
