Top Performers
Senior Paige Stanfield won state last year for javelin and could win again this year, according to JV distance coach Abra Scanlon. Senior Macy Sims can possibly place at state for high jump, while junior Charlotte Hardy could potentially secure her third state title.
There are also sprinters that could go to state, according to head coach Mark Simoneau.
“You typically have to run at or below 11 in the 100 [meter dash], and I think we have guys capable of doing that,” Simoneau said.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Many of the long distance athletes have years of experience, giving the team a strong competitive foundation, according to Scanlon.
“Track is not really a team sport, it’s very individual, but our [distance] girls have a chance to come together as a bunch of individuals and really do well as a team at state,” Scanlon said.
As for weaknesses, new distance runners are still working to build stamina. The boys team is younger this season after losing several seniors last year, meaning many newer athletes are developing and filling open spots, according to Scanlon.
Sprinters are focused on building their conditioning after coming from other sports and learning as they ease into the season, according to Simoneau.
Upcoming Meets
The first meet is the SM East quad on March 27 at 3 p.m. at the SM East track, which will be one of the only home meets of the season.
Injuries
Freshman George Clifford is recovering from a stress fracture from the cross country season and has just recently started getting back into training with the team.
