Track and Field Updates

Current Placements

  •  The SM East varsity track team recently participated in RunningLane Kansas City Relays on April 17 at Blue Springs South High School.
  • The boys sprint medley relay placed second and the girls 4x800 meter relay placed third.
  • Additionally, varsity participated in the Harry McDonald Blue Valley Relays, and junior Charlotte Hardy, freshman Lyla Speicher, sophomore Sophia Cicero and senior Chloe Swan broke the SM East Distance Medley Relay record with a time of 12:29.50.
  • The team is currently ranked ninth in the state and according to Lyla Speicher, as they are very competitive with schools like Olathe West, BV West and Manhattan High. 

Top Performers

  • Junior Charlotte Hardy is a top performer in distance events, and broke the SM East 3200 meter record at KC Relays with a time of 10:33.09 beating the previous record of 10:43.48 set in 2022 by Grace Meyer.
  • Senior Cate Conrad broke her own school record at KC Relays. Senior Paige Stanfield has placed first in Javelin at many meets including KC Relays and SM South Relays.
  • Sophomore Livea Simoneau broke the SM East record in shot put with a distance of 38’1.5” at KC Relays on April 18th. Simoneau is ranked first in Kansas in the event.
  • Senior Charlie Croker has committed to track at Northwest Missouri State University for long jump, as well as senior Chloe Swan, who has committed to Colorado Mesa University for distance running.
  • “Track is just very fun,” Speicher said. “Everyone's super nice, everyone's super supportive. Like, even your opponents, they're gonna tell you good luck, give you hugs afterwards.”

Upcoming Competitions

  • The SM West Invitational at SM South is on April 24th.
  • The De Soto Invitational at De Soto High School is on May 1.
  • The SM North relays at SM North are on May 8.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • “The distance team is awesome,” freshman Lyla Speicher said. “I think all we can do is just keep staying consistent,” Speicher said. “Running is a mind game, so many need to keep their mind strong. 
It's all about your mindset.

Injuries

  • There have been no recent injuries on the varsity team.

Lineup Changes

  • There have been few changes in lineup.
  • Coach Simoneau determines whether junior varsity athletes can advance and run in the varsity meets. Simoneau bases decisions on athletes performance in practice and other meets

Although being a new staffer will keep her busy, Claire enjoys doing other activities like playing tennis, lacrosse, reading and swimming.
