The javelin was hurled into the ground, 146 feet and 11 inches from where senior Paige Stanfield was standing. When Paige turned around, excited after throwing her new personal record, she saw her friend and fellow softball teammate, senior Talia Augustine, cheering for her on the sidelines.
Paige broke the SM East school javelin record last track season and is now the number one girls 6A javelin thrower in Kansas.
“It feels weird because I've only done the sport for a year now,” Paige said. “I think it's me [being] competitive and wanting to be first and everything, so it's really rewarding.”
Paige not only wins varsity track meets in javelin, she also plays on the varsity softball team during the same season and plays varsity basketball in the winter. But, softball is her main sport and top priority. She committed to the University of Alabama — one of the top three softball teams in the country— at the start of her junior year.
Before the start of track season later in her junior year, Head Track and Field Coach Mark Simoneau came to Paige asking if she’d be interested in javelin. After seeing her success in softball, he thought she’d have a good arm for javelin.
“As the track coach, you're always looking for kids that you feel like have potential to do well in certain events,” Simoneau said. “With Paige's background with softball, we tried to see if she could throw the javelin or not. The first time she went through it, she really had a good feel, kind of a natural feel, for how to throw it. She's, in a very short time, accomplished a lot in that event.”
Paige travels to the Center for Academic Achievement during the afternoon for the Medical Science Program everyday after attending her classes at East in the mornings. Then, she drives her mini-cooper back to East for softball practice, followed by a short javelin practice — granted she doesn’t have an away softball game.
“I've seen her be stressed, but she always just battles through it and works past it,” Paige’s brother sophomore Carson Stanfield said. “I try to be at her track meets and at her softball games. I really like watching my sister play.”
For the majority of her games and meets, Carson can be found sitting in the bleachers next to his parents, cheering for his older sister. Paige, in turn, can be found sitting next to her parents, cheering on Carson at his wrestling matches. The two are very close siblings and always there to help by driving each other to practices, according to Carson.
Paige always prioritizes softball over javelin. Some weeks, Paige only has time to throw once or twice due to conflicts with softball. Her track coaches help her schedule javelin practices around her softball schedule — even if they have to stay later to work with Paige on her throw or exercises.
“It's definitely challenging, because the track meets and softball games fall on the same day a lot, which sucks,” Paige said. “But my coaches are very understanding, and they really help me out a lot with that.”
Despite the hectic schedules and missed practices, Paige continues to break records at the track meets she’s able to attend. Though she’ll put up her javelin after this season, Paige looks forward to sharing her history with the sport throughout college and beyond.
Whether she’s launching a metal spear across a field or catching a lime-colored softball in her leather mitt, Paige never fails to give less than 100% effort into either sport, according to Augustine. With her friends, family and coaches support, Paige is now recognized as one of the top javelin throwers in the state.
“She's very competitive,” Simoneau said. “She's very driven. She wants to be the best she can possibly be, so it's not surprising that she has been as successful as she has been, and as a coach, it's just fun to watch her develop and work at it and have success.”
