The Thrifting Trap: The stress and inconvenience of online thrifting isn't worth it

Thump. My phone dropped and hit my bedside table — the screen still glowing in the dark.

It was 11:53 p.m. on a school night and instead of sleeping, I had just spent 40 minutes refreshing the Parke website, hoping the Sprinkle Pink Mockneck would magically restock.

Part of Parke's limited edition Birthday collection, the mockneck was a one-time drop in the exact soft pink I'd been obsessed with for months.

Three days later, my message sat there untouched — no response, no tracking number, nothing. I checked my notifications obsessively, hoping for a sign the order was moving.

Eventually, I had to contact Depop to cancel my order and after two weeks of waiting, I finally got my money back. The process was tedious and frustrating, making me question why I even would wear the Sprinkle Pink Mockneck in the first place.

Now, with that awful experience in hindsight, I can see how much patience these apps demand for a purchase that should only be a simple click of a button.

Even if prices seem lower, the time spent negotiating, tracking shipments and worrying whether the item will even arrive often outweighs the savings.

On top of that, shipping fees can be surprisingly high and delivery times vary depending on the seller, which can turn a bargain into an unexpectedly expensive purchase — almost identical to the item's original worth.

Buying from established websites may cost a little more, but the quality is guaranteed. Shipping is reliable and you don't have to spend every second of free time refreshing the app just to make sure your order shows up at your front door.

For anyone tempted by these apps, it might be worth asking yourself: is the thrill of a “rare find” really worth the stress of determining if the seller is scamming you or not?

Looking back at the Sprinkle Pink Mockneck, I can't help but shake my head. What was supposed to be exciting and exclusive, quickly turned into frustration.

The waiting, the shipping fees and the uncertainty made me realize a bigger truth: online thrifting apps, whether Depop or others, often make bargains seem bigger than they actually come out to be.

So if you find a deal that seems too good to be true, remember: sometimes the price itself can come with a cost.
