If you had asked my sixth-grade self to list 10 things that she couldn't live without, somewhere on that list would be a Strawberry Acai Lemonade Refresher from Starbucks.
And now, four years later, I can confirm the delectable beverage is still on that list.
When Starbucks announced its new menu items — one being the Mango Strawberry Refresher — I was curious to see if it could beat my all-time favorite, Strawberry Acai.
Starbucks’ refreshers are light and fruity, made with a fruit juice base, mixed with an option of water, lemonade or coconut milk.
Although I'm not a huge fan of mango, let alone in my drinks, I figured the Mango Refresher might pair well with the strawberry for a refreshing, lovely drink to bring cold and dreary Kansas into the vibrant summer weather.
The refresher comes in the usual variations of water-based, lemonade or coconut milk. Additionally, Starbucks came out with a caffeine-based option with a range of caffeine amounts depending on the size of your drink.
Since caffeine usage is increasing, not only for just myself, but for our entire society, I think Starbucks adding it to one of their most popular drinks was an excellent way to attract customers.
After attempting to create an energy drink back in 2024, the Melon Burst Iced Energy fell short, due to its lack of flavor and being only available in the biggest size — a venti. This felt like Starbucks’ way of giving customers more variety of options to choose from. So I decided to give the drinks a try.
Mango Strawberry Refresher
First, I ordered the new venti Mango Strawberry Lemonade Refresher.
The drink's stunning ombre orangeish-pink color caught my eye instantly, making me curious to see what it would taste like.
Before trying the drink, I expected the mango flavoring in the refresher to overpower the strawberry as this has been the case for many other Starbucks refreshers, like the discontinued Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher. But instead, the strawberry flavor was subtle, followed by the quick reveal of the tanginess of the mango.
I thought the freeze-dried strawberry inclusions gave the drink a nice decorative aspect. But as soon as I received my drink, I could see the bits slowly start shrinking into a soggy, unappetizing mess.
Although I've had this happen with many other Starbucks drinks before, I was still annoyed and it killed my excitement to try the drink.
The drink had some flaws, yet I still thought the Mango Strawberry Refresher brought a delectable and delightful drink to the menu that was worth buying a second time.
Energy Refresher
But I didn't stop there. Still eager to see if the new Energy Refreshers were any good, I decided to order a tall Strawberry Acai Refresher in the standard caffeine option.
The flavor was no different than the original non-caffeinated Refresher. It tasted just as delicious, with every strawberry and lemony flavor still strongly present.
I thought the amount of ice added to my drink was extremely excessive and unnecessary. Before I knew it, I’d look down and see that my drink was already halfway empty after only five sips. This made me feel as if I didn't receive the amount of energy I expected to get from the drink.
What stood out most was that the drink wasn't fizzy. By adding a caffeinated option to classic refreshers without changing the flavor profile, Starbucks created a smart option that provides an energy boost while keeping its familiar taste.
Although Starbucks’ Mango Strawberry refresher doesn't quite replace the classic Strawberry Acai, the new menu items bring a delicious twist to their menu that's worth trying.
