The Pink Peony: A students voyage into fashion blogging

“That one!” then-four-year-old Molly Schumm blurted out while helping her mom, Amy Schumm shop. Amy held two sets of colorful leggings, but Molly rejected both. Instead, she reached for different pair at the end of the aisle. Surprised by her daughters awareness for fashion, she purchased the pants from the help of her young clothing prodigy.

Molly’s selectiveness for clothing at a young age has developed into creating her very own Instagram fashion blog — The Pink Peony. Established almost three weeks ago, her fashion blog has amassed over 200 followers, and is steadily growing every day.

“I have always wanted to start my own boutique where I can have people purchase clothes that are cute and fashionable,” Schumm said. “I think a blog is a great way to kick start that”

To help her with managing and uploading content on a regular basis, Schumm gets help from her mom, who is The Pink Peony’s full time photographer.

“When Molly told me she wanted to start her very own blog I was so happy to see her incorporate her love of fashion into something that other people can see,” Amy said. “I wanted to help her in any way I could.”

According to Amy, Molly has always had a great sense of fashion ever since she could count to three. Whether they were trying to find an outfit for her friends fifth birthday or picking out Christmas pajamas, Molly always made her opinion clear — positive or negative.

Schumm shows her love for fashion through posting a new “outfit of the day” for her instagram followers — which are a mix of East students, friends, family and other internet fashionistas. Along with OOTD’s, she also posts things like fashion tips and unusual finds — anywhere from Walmart to J. Crew. If she is out shopping and finds something of interest, she always whips out her iPhone to upload an edited pic to her Instagram, according to Schumm.

While Schumm displays her tips and tricks for building a better outfit, she also tries to engage her audience with giveaways. For her most recent giveaway the requirements were simple — they just had to follow her and tag two friends for a chance to win a Glossier Lip Balm and a Forever 21 hair tie.

“When I got over 100 followers I thought doing a giveaway would be a fun way to thank my friends and other people who have followed my account,” Schumm said. “It really helped spread the word, because I got so many follow requests after.”

Schumm is continuing to add to her digital wardrobe in the hopes to start her very own clothing store later on in her life.

“Right now, I’m just having fun trying to show the people around me something that is important to me: fashion,” Schumm said.
