Growing up, senior twins Lila and Grant Kimmel liked all of the same things: gymnastics and tumbling, flag football, swimming and dive — Lila doing butterfly and backstroke and Grant doing breaststroke.
Beyond sports, the two share a love for country music, Taco Naco — carne asada tacos with a shared plate of queso — going to bed early and waking up early. Childhood family road trips consisted of building a giant bed in the backseat just to pass out sleeping and eating donuts the entire car ride.
Even so, the two attending the University of Oklahoma together just happened to be.
“[For me, OU] was always just one of [my top colleges],” Lila said. “But then I didn't really take it seriously until I went down there, and I got a campus tour, and I got to see the vibe and everything, and I really liked it.”
The nursing program at OU attracted Lila. University of South Carolina was too far away, and University of Iowa required physics to be taken for the nursing program — and Lila didn’t take physics.
At the Sweetheart’s Dance afterparty on Feb. 7, Lila decided on the University of Oklahoma.
Grant was between Indiana University and The University of Kansas. After not getting direct acceptance into the Kelly School of Business at Indiana, and liking the environment and campus at OU, he decided on OU in November after the two visited the campus earlier that month.
“I decided before her,” Grant said.
Around a week after the Sweetheart Dance and letting the choice sink in, Lila told Grant she had decided on OU.
“We each made our own decision, and it just ended up being the same place, which is great,” Lila said. “But also, where he was going wasn't going to influence my decision at all.”
Their parents loved it.
Their older brother, who will graduate from Ole Miss in the spring, just got a job in Dallas — where their older sister is. So, the twins will only be two and a half hours away from them.
“We'll have all four kids on the same highway,” Grant said. “That's what my mom says.”
The two will be able to drive back to Kansas City for breaks together, sometimes alongside other SM East students attending OU, just like how they carpooled throughout high school — Grant being the one to drive most of the time.
“She's not a good driver,” Grant said.
“Okay, I'm a great driver,” Lila said. “I had a better ACT score.”
“By literally one point better than mine,” Grant said.
But the twins are looking forward to next year.
“It'll be nice to see him out and be able to meet people and friends through each other,” Lila said. “I promise we love each other.”
