For 34 years, “¡Hola, clase!” is how Doctor Jeff Finnie has started his Spanish classes — “Bonjour la classe!” For French. But after this school year, Finnie is immigrating to Israel, trading his French and Spanish for Hebrew.
After visiting Israel and staying in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Finnie made the decision to settle in Jerusalem next year, motivated by his Jewish faith and a desire to live in Earth's only Jewish state.
A huge factor in his decision to move, according to Finnie, is the number of synagogues available in Israel, along with the community for Jewish people.
Though Finnie announced his retirement this year and is moving across the globe, he is considering continuing teaching. Finnie wants to teach English to people in Israel to “continue contributing to society.”
Finnie is multilingual — speaking English, French and Spanish and learning Hebrew — and was inspired to learn so many languages by his experience living in the Philippines, a country with over 180 languages, as a child.
Through teaching, Finnie has helped inspire others to pursue language learning, such as Spanish 4 student, sophomore Princess Garcia.
“His classroom has always been a really nice place to end the day,” Garcia said. “When everything else is too stressful, walking into his class is really refreshing. It’s never tense, it just feels really nice to be there.”
Garcia, a current student in Finnie's Spanish 4, says Finnie's unique teaching style helped her develop a love for the language and encouraged her to continue taking Spanish classes. Finnie emphasizes the need for his students to think, opting for discussion-based classes rather than lectures and using his catchphrase “to listen is to work.”
“His teaching style is different from other classes,” Garcia said. “I like that it's super interactive, [we] talk about current events and read books in Spanish.”
Finnie's impact goes beyond just how well his students know French or Spanish. His classes — and his many jokes — provide students with a place to de-stress and relax in an environment dedicated to thinking, rather than being filled non-stop with tests.
“[SM] East is going to miss him,” Garcia said. “Not just his teaching, but the energy he brings and how he connects with his students.”
