Swift’s Spends: How Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has contributed to boosting the US economy

Taylor Swift has almost single handedly pulled the United States out of a borderline recession, according to Markets Insider.

While Swift’s musical success is hard to keep a secret, the impact she’s had on the U.S. economy is unexpected and undeniable, according to AP US History teacher and Taylor Swift enthusiast Jenny Jordan. Both local and national economies are being boosted by her 131 concerts in 17 different states, claims Markets Insider.

“A lot of people have grown up with [Swift] in some way or another, so it’s just a really big tour for her,” Jordan said. “The purchase of hotel rooms, plane tickets and restaurants all benefited the community.”

According to business and marketing teacher Amanda Doane, the U.S. economy is a cycle. First, there’s expansion until it reaches prosperity. Next, recession begins bringing the economy to depression, and finally there’s recovery.

“In our Marketing classes, we refer to the peak as prosperity,” Doane said, “Expansion leads to prosperity, which is followed by a recession.”

On Nov. 1, Swift announced her first tour since the “Reputation” tour in 2018. It’s been dubbed “the Eras Tour” because Swift’s set list features songs from each of her albums or “Eras” rather than just one. Jordan claims that due to Swift’s varied setlist and Swift’s ever-growing popularity, crowds multiplied from previous tours.

When Swift announced the Eras Tour, economists were preparing for the US to enter a recession due to less employment opportunities, according to Markets Insider.

As the tour began, the economy began to enter recovery — skipping the depression phase of the economic cycle. In economics, this type of situation is often considered a “soft landing,”  according to CNBC news.

So how did Taylor Swift — a pink-loving, romance-singing pop star — pull off something politicians and economists have been trying to unfold for decades?

Swift presented something that people were willing to pay thousands of dollars for. Fans traveled to different cities, paying for hotels, album-themed outfits — ranging from hot pink mini skirts to all black bodysuits with snake earrings, merchandise and bracelet-making materials — self-proclaimed “Swifties” have contributed to boost the economy to heights not seen since pre-pandemic.
