Students walked out of school yesterday at 1 p.m. to protest recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The walkout lasted over two hours and, at its peak, involved an estimated number of 200 students.
“Seeing them walk out of the school, one after another, made me feel very hopeful about the future,” sophomore and walkout organizer Hudson Terreros said. “And seeing everyone walk around, keep fighting was awesome.”
During the protest, students walked out onto the football field by the parking lot off of West 75th St. and yelled chants like “F-- ICE” and “No Trump. No KKK. No Fascist USA.” The students walked around the football field and eventually walked to the intersection of 75th St. and Mission Rd.
Seniors Sage Lickteig and Claire Polanco believe that it was important that SM East, specifically, did the walkout to speak up against what ICE has been doing, since the school is predominantly white. For them, it’s an opportunity for students to share their beliefs.
“It's important for us as students to use our voices and to stand up for what we believe in, especially moving forward,” Polanco said. “We're going to be the future politicians and the future people making decisions. So if there's any time for us to start speaking up and for our voices to be heard, then it's going to be now.”
Multiple administrators supervised the walkout to ensure student safety. Some students stood in the parking lot, near where the walkout was taking place, and waved a Donald Trump flag, honked and yelled towards the protestors.
Sophomore Leifr Zamora was against the protest. Zamora is not pro-Trump and is against the actions ICE has taken towards American citizens, but believes ICE is helping communities by keeping illegal immigrants out of the country and preventing crime. Zamora believes that the protestors should instead focus on other issues, like the Epstein files or the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“I think [illegal immigrants] are more violent, you know, more rapes, way more rapes, obviously ICE didn’t f*cking rape people,” Zamora said. “More murders, generally more of a detriment to our communities than, you know, a federal agency, which [has] existed for God knows how long.”
Junior Daniela Saucedo disagrees with ICE's recent actions and participated in the walkout because she believes immigrants belong in America.
“I'm here protesting because my parents came from Mexico, gave up everything, just for me to have a better life here, and everyone over here is telling my parents to go back to their country,” Saucedo said. “Well, we're not. We're gonna stay here, and I'm gonna prove them all wrong.”
Students who participated in the walkout knowingly received unexcused absences and missed a large portion, if not all, of their sixth hour.
“I think it was absolutely worth it,” junior Jenna Trast said. “[...] It was very empowering. I was very proud of all my classmates. I'm so glad we could go and make our voices heard.”
