Sony, Marvel & Spider-Man Q&A: Kara Auvray

Sony and Disney announced on Aug. 20 that all Spider-Man films will no longer feature MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) characters and that Spider-Man will no longer be featured in MCU films. The character pull from the franchise is due to complications between Sony and Marvel regarding revenue sharing. After making over one billion dollars with “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Marvel wanted 50 percent of the profit instead of five. In the end, Sony decided to pull Spider-Man from the MCU.

Senior Kara Auvray is an avid Spider-Man and Marvel fan who has been following the Marvel movies since the start in 2008.

How has your love for Marvel grown over the years?

“My love for Marvel has definitely grown over the years, especially with the expansion of the movies they have made going from Iron Man to Captain America to the Avengers. And there are so many characters ranging from Dr. Strange to Black Panther. I love the expansion.”

What do you like most about Spider-Man?

“He’s really relatable because there have been a lot of past Spider-Man movies, but I feel that Tom Holland is really able to embody that role really well by being the naive and fun teen that’s a part of all the different international events that have to do with the Avengers.”

What was your reaction when you found out Spider-Man was removed from the MCU?

“I was at home doing homework when a friend texted me about it and honestly I thought it was a joke. I went online, looked it up and realized it was a serious thing that was happening and I was really disappointed and sad because I feel like Spider-Man had just fit in so well into the MCU. I had obviously watched a lot of the Spider-Man movies before, but I feel like he was just really right in the MCU and Spider-Man was able to thrive within that particular story.”

What are you going to miss most about Spider-Man no longer being in the MCU?

“I think that I am going to miss his personality and all the youth that he brings to it, especially after ‘End Game.’ With Iron Man and Captain America both gone, Spider-Man was one of the big characters and one of the big hopes for the “face” of the Marvel movies. Without him in it, I think it is going to be really disappointing, not only for Disney and the Marvel Universe, but also for Sony because I feel like the Spider-Man movies just weren’t as popular until he joined the MCU. I think I am just going to miss him and the interactions he has with the other characters like Nick Fury and then having Iron Man as his parental father figure.”

Do you think the deal will last or that they’ll come to a new arrangement?

“I know that Tom Holland has spoken out about it and thinks the new Spider-Man movies will still be great but they will have to figure out how to go in a new direction. I really feel like they might still be able to reach a deal just because so many fans have expressed their sadness and outrage about their inability to reach a deal and I just feel like if they are not able to reach a deal that they would both lose out.”

How will they make the switch with the plot line they have evolved for Spider-Man?

“That is something I have been wondering because at the end of ‘[Spiderman:] Far From Home’ it was set up beautifully to even further the integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Nick Fury and all of the other things. I don’t know if they will be able to just completely take out this perfect set-up for the third movie they have created.”

How do you think this will affect the Spider-Man movies and the future MCU movies?

“I think it will have a negative effect for both. I feel like fans will still come out and support because of the love they have for Tom Holland and Zendaya and the entire cast, but I feel like there will still be this overwhelming disappointment at the fact that he is no longer a part of the MCU. I just feel like especially his relationship with a lot of the other characters is something that is going to be missed in the future Marvel movies.”

Do you think Sony will be as successful as Marvel was with Spider-Man?

“I think that there will still be a good amount of success because of the amazing cast they have. I’ll definitely still go to see regardless of plot line because I love Tom Holland and Zendaya so much, but plot-wise I don’t see how they can live up to the previous movies released.”

How do you think this has impacted the Marvel community?

“It has definitely been something that is very sad for avid Marvel fans, especially with some of the fans saying they will boycott some of the new Marvel Avenger video games that have come out. I think it’s been something that’s brought a lot of Marvel fans together to try to keep this deal in place.”
