Applications to participate in the school-wide Lip Dub, a large-scale music video featuring a variety of clubs, sports and organizations, and other school activities, are due today.
Organized by the Pep Club, the Lip Dub is a video where members from school activities lip-sync (moving lips silently in sync with a prerecorded track) to popular songs as a camera crew travels through the building. The event occurs every four years, allowing each student to participate once during their high school career. This will be the fourth Lip Dub.
“Every club and organization in the school gets to dress up and show off what they are made of,” Pep Executive and senior Luke Taylor said.
After leaders of school activities submit their applications, the Pep Executives will begin organizing the event by assigning songs to each group and mapping out a route through the building. Applications are on the pep club’s Instagram bio, and the application asks for the name of the activity and a group leader. Each group gets a part of a song and a section in the school to perform, which they then pass onto the next group.
This year, the pep club plans to hire an SM East alumni and Kansas State University videographer, Calen Domingues, to shoot and edit the video. Filming is expected to take place during seminar sometime in April or May, and it is filmed all in one take in about a 10 to 15 minute span. Pep club is awaiting approval from the school administrators about which day it will happen.
“It only happens once in a person’s high school career,” senior Pep Executive Georgia Boyd.
said. “It’s something everyone watches forever, and it's really fun to look back on.”
The Pep Executives have been planning for the Lip Dub since last fall, including coordinating dates with administration and selecting songs that are clean, recognizable and fit the group’s personality.
Depending on how many groups sign up, the video could feature 30 or more songs. Each club or team will be assigned a section of the building and a specific track to perform. Their group leader will guide the camera from one location to the next. The pep club will start the video, and then pass it on to the leader of the next activity.
After their part in the video, all students who participated in the video run to the auditorium to sing the school song, an experience Kimmel says is the most special part.
Senior Pep Executive Grant Kimmel has been looking forward to the Lip Dub since eighth grade. His siblings graduated in 2019 and 2022, and he remembers watching the video in middle school, thinking, “Wow, we’re going to be seniors when we do this.”
At the end of the video, featuring his brother and sister, the credits said “We can't wait to see what the class of 2026 comes up with!”, which made Kimmel even more excited.
“The school community aspect is my favorite part,” Kimmel said. “Getting everyone involved is such a fun time, and the video is definitely worth it. Seeing everyone come together at the end is really special.”
With the deadline approaching, the Pep Club encourages all groups to apply.
“Hopefully, everyone signs up and is excited,” Taylor said. “It’s a super fun tradition.”
