Safe and Well: Senior Ella Morrissey has received her new heart and is stable in recovery

Senior Ella Morrissey woke up this morning and is officially in the recovery process from her heart transplant, which took place yesterday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ella’s vitals are stable and the surgery went well according to her twin and senior, Maria Morrissey.

The Morrisseys found out Ella will be receiving a heart at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, but didn’t receive the heart until Sunday morning due to the circumstances of the donor. She’ll be

feeling weak, congested and for a few weeks, according to Maria.

Ella will now work on getting herself back to normal and going through the necessary recovery process which will include being on numerous new medications. These will have mental health side effects, but will help her to recover and avoid rejection of the heart.

“I feel like everyone’s been so scared but I’m just happy,” Maria said. “I will say when they texted me that they got the heart it was the best day of my life. I just started smiling and I was really happy and we FaceTimed at 6 a.m. right before her surgery with [lots of our friends.]”
