Review: Denver Biscuit Co., Frozen Gold, and Fat Sully’s Pizza

Three brand new brand restaurants in Westport have recently opened up, and if you can get past the possible commute time and dreadful parallel parking, Denver Biscuit Co., Frozen Gold and Fat Sully’s Pizza are all worth your time.

Although finding your way around Westport can be a little tricky, or at least it was for me, I found Denver Biscuit and Fat Sully’s Pizza sitting in the same building after five minutes of walking in circles — they could have added some signs, to say the least.

The large bar-like atmosphere of Denver Biscuit Company is illuminated with LED signs all around the restaurant. It feels a bit more like walking into a sports bar than a breakfast place, but the friendly employees and outstanding playlist in the background made up for it.

I ordered the strawberry shortcake biscuit plate, and my friend ordered the biscuit french toast. When the meal came out, it felt like a meal for three rather than one. It was a huge biscuit topped with whipped cream and strawberries in a sea of strawberry sauce. The flavorful platter was a lot to take on, and after just a few bites, I was full. The sweet and savory mix was a perfect blend to make my tastebuds happy.

Leaving the Denver Biscuit Company with full bellies but an agenda to try every place, we headed over to Frozen Gold —an ice cream shop around the corner. The shop was covered with bright, bold colors such as hot pink and bright orange, making it feel like I was thrown back into the 90’s.

There were only ten flavors, ranging from a plain old vanilla cone with chocolate dip to vanilla ice cream filled with salted caramel and covered in Cheez-its and Goldfish. I decided to go with the “cookie crumbles” flavor, a vanilla soft serve engulfed in oreo crumbs and chocolate chip cookie dough with a brown sugar fudge softcore.

The ice cream came out bigger than my typical single-scoop from Baskin Robbins, but I was ready to take on the challenge. I was pleasantly surprised when the tasty ice cream– with so much on top–stayed intact throughout the time I was eating it.

The third and final place was Fat Sully’s Pizza, which was inside the Denver Biscuit Co. building, but  included a separate ordering window — my favorite part about it. It was by far the most COVID-friendly of the three. There’s lots of outdoor seating, as well as space indoors if you prefer dining in.

I went with a very basic, but classic order: one slice of cheese pizza. But it wasn’t your usual one piece of pizza, it was bigger than my whole head. For that much pizza in one slice, it was a reasonable price at around five dollars.

The New York style pizza came out at a rapid speed and was steaming hot– fresh out of the oven, allowing it to melt in your mouth with every bite.

Overall, the three new Westport restaurants were better than I expected, but all had one thing in common – huge portions of food.
