Before Paige or Will had stepped foot in the journalism room, they met in Will's front yard on Lancer Day back in eighth grade, because his family hosted an annual watch party.
She picked on him for the Nikon D800 around his neck because of her dad’s loyalty to Canon. He was surprised to meet someone who knew as much about cameras as he did.
Paige brought her dad’s Pentax 35-millimeter film camera to an outdoor Halloween party Will was at a few months later. Will commented on the low lighting and confidently said Paige wouldn’t be able to get a well-lit picture, completely forgetting that he had met her earlier.
Somehow, she got the shot and made it her mission to get the photo back to Will...
And maybe his number.
A year later, they both enrolled in 21st Century Journalism, where together they learned AP style and how to interview their peers. The pair has spent four years straight in Room 400, which may explain why they know nearly everything about each other — from possible dating prospects to their shared, sickly sleep schedules. Odds are, if one is awake at 2 a.m., the other is too.
Over time, their styles split in the best way.
Will has become synonymous with sports photography. Growing up playing soccer and baseball and watching every other sport on TV, Will can identify the turning point of a game before it happens.
And sure enough, when Paige meets students from other schools and mentions being a photographer at SM East, the first question is almost always, “Do you know Will Griffith?”
Oh, does she.
While Paige didn’t have an infatuation for basketball reruns or minor-league baseball, her photography style gravitated towards student life and the quieter moments of human connection, which later sparked an interest in filmmaking.
After nearly five years together, they understand each other in the strangest ways. Will’s texts remain incoherent to most, but Paige has become fluent in “Will Griffith” and can translate almost any message into English. He makes it up to her with Chick-fil-A runs on Thursday mornings.
Will plans to study advertising this fall at the University of Oregon, and Paige is pursuing film production at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. And though the two will be hundreds of miles apart, Paige will always be fluent in “Will Griffith” and Will will keep DoorDashing Paige’s lunch.
Not half bad for two kids who met arguing over Nikon and Canon.
