New Year, New Seminar: East implements new seminar pass system

The pass system to travel between classes during seminar time has changed this year to improve accountability and prevent students from leaving the building.

Last year, students had almost free rein to travel within the school. Administration is changing the rules because they believe that some students abused the freedom.

This year, students have received a cardstock paper with their name and schedule. Students can visit teachers starting at 9:30 a.m., 10 minutes after seminar starts. Students have five minutes to get to their destination after it has been approved by their teacher. The cardstock paper acts as a signal to those monitoring the halls, notifying them that the student has permission to be traveling in the hallway.

When the student gets to the classroom where they need academic help, that teacher will sign the paper to mark that they went to the promised location instead of wandering the halls or leaving the building without permission.

At the end of each seminar, similar to a passing period, students have five minutes to return to their assigned seminar by 10:45 a.m., where they will turn in their cardstock paper.

Administration hopes that this new procedure will cause students to use their time more wisely.

“We want to create change,” Principal Jason Peres said. “We want a pass system to put our kids in a position where they are using their time purposefully.”

Associate Principal Barikmo agrees, emphasizing the need for students to acquire the time management skills necessary to succeed post-high school.

“When we go into college or into the next step of careers after high school, [time management is] a skill that is expected,” Barikmo said. “[Employers] don’t want to have to teach that.”

He hopes that the new procedure will reduce the amount of at-home work that students have to do each night.

In an Instagram poll of 289 East students, 43 agreed that the new pass system helped them be more productive during seminar.
