Students honored at awards ceremony

Over 500 students and parents turned out on Monday night for the annual Shawnee Mission East academic awards ceremony. The semi-formal event held in the East Auditorium featured a variety of honors for juniors and seniors who have excelled academically in their high school careers. The awards given ranged from divisional academic awards in the fields of Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Practical Arts, World Language, Math, and Health/Physical Education, to a slew of special recognition awards. The students honored are those who ranked in the top of the senior class for their work in the previous two school years.

Some of the night’s top honors included the AP scholar award, which was given to senior Qi Chen for receiving the most scores of “4” or above on Kansas AP exams, and the Star Scholarship award given to senior Sarah Are for all of her hard work and commitment towards community service and other projects around school. While many individuals were honored for their work in and outside of school, 192 seniors won at least one of several academic awards handed out at the end of the night. The Presidents Award for Educational Excellence, The Kansas Board of Regents Recognition, Scholarship Certificates, Kansas ACT scholar certificates, and Kansas Honor Scholar were all given to students who had high enough GPAs and test scores to qualify.

The event included a performance of the national anthem by the East Choraliers led by choir director Ken Foley and a flag presentation from the NJROTC Color Guard.
