Linscott golf success: East parent takes on competitive tournaments

Throughout her life, golfing has always been a constant for East mom-of-three, Martha Linscott.

After golfing in college at Missouri State University and for a few years after she graduated, Martha ended her competitive-golfing-streak until 2010.

Since competing again in the last ten years, Martha has gone on to compete in local competitions, most of which are put on by Central Links Golf Association, which includes players from all over Kansas. They offer a Kansas amateur, a tournament for all ages and a senior amateur, a tournament for people over fifty years old.

After competing in local tournaments, Martha decided she wanted to play nationally. She enjoys competing at this level because she competes against a wider range of players, which increases her skill level and allows her to meet new people.

“When you get to see other people from different parts of the country, you get to compare your game with their game,” Martha said. “It helps me figure out what I need to work on and what my strengths and weaknesses are”.

Since January, Martha has played almost 100 rounds because of quarantine: almost double what she usually plays in a year.

Martha’s love for golf has caused the entire Linscott family to be involved in the sport and play at Indian Hills Country Club, where they have been members since 1996. All three of the Linscott kids participated in golf at East and Maeve Linscott, the youngest, is currently playing as a junior.

Maeve’s drive to play golf started from a young age. Her mom was always on the course in her free time, which gave Maeve the motivation to start the sport herself.

“Watching my mom have such a deep passion for a sport drives me to be passionate about what I am doing too,” Maeve said.

The hardest part of golf for Martha has been the mental blocks that come with bad shots and bad rounds. She has had to learn to not get stuck on critiquing every one of her shots and to move on after a bad swing.

Martha’s not planning on pressing the breaks anytime soon. She’s hoping to continue doing what she loves at a level she loves, and she even has dreams of eventually  winning a national tournament.
