Laura Little’s Candy Kitchen Review

I pass by the cherry red awning hanging on the left side of 75th every time I head over to the Trolley Trails for cross country practice.  For some reason though, I’ve never stopped by to see what hidden treasures the inside of this building holds.  But finally last week, when I was craving something sweet, I decided it was time I peel off of 75th on my way to Waldo Pizza and see what Laura Little’s Chocolates has to offer — I’m always up for a good dessert before dinner!

As soon as I stepped foot into the quaint little chocolate shop, I knew had made the right decision. A wave of warm, melted chocolate greeted me as I opened the doors to the shop. Shortly after, my attention was captivated by all the colorful Easter streamers hanging from the ceilings, which added to the festive ambiance of the store.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a choc-o-holic.  It’s gotten to the point where my mom doesn’t let me give up chocolate for Lent anymore, because she thinks I go too crazy without it.  So you can imagine how hard it was for me to decide what to order.

The dimensions of Laura Little’s set it up perfectly to be an old-fashioned chocolate shop.  The shop stretches horizontally, which makes it easy to have displays of chocolate that last the entire length of the store. I swear I was pacing back and forth through the chocolates for 10 minutes because I was trying to decide if I wanted my last chocolate in the box to be the dark chocolate peanut cluster or mint sandwich.

I ended up ordering a dark chocolate peanut cluster, peanut butter rice krispy, milk chocolate covered oreo and chocolate peanut butter fudge which totalled up to be $5.49.  For such high quality chocolates, I was pleasantly surprised with this price and was bummed I hadn’t ordered more.

My personal favorite chocolate I ordered was the peanut butter rice krispy.  The outer layer was initially hard to bite down on because of the solid milk chocolate coating, but the inside was stuffed with creamy peanut butter.  The rice krispies inside of the peanut butter also provided an extra crunchy texture that made the chocolate more enjoyable.  My only complaint with this chocolate was the size — I took two small bites of it and was already finished.

The peanut butter fudge tasted like it had just been handcrafted by angels themselves — it somehow mastered the art of being rich and flavorful, but not overwhelming to the point where I couldn’t finish it.

Similarly, the chocolate covered Oreo surpassed my expectations, as I was anticipating it to taste just like a standard Oreo. However, the milk chocolate layer over the entire Oreo seemed to have transformed the Oreo, as it tasted much richer (in a good way) and I was able to have more chocolate than Oreo filling.

But then again, you could dump chocolate on anything and I would probably say it was yummy.  In the end, I was satisfied that I chose the dark chocolate peanut cluster.  The dark chocolate was sweet and the peanuts tied the chocolate altogether by adding a saltier flavor and crunchy texture.

As I was checking out, the workers there put the finishing touch on my positive experience at Laura Little’s, as they both struck up lively conversation with me about my senior year and tied a pink bow around my box of chocolate. With its close proximity to my house and wide assortment of mouth-watering chocolates, I left knowing I’ll be making several more trips to the building with the cherry red awning.Screen Shot 2018-03-01 at 5.54.47 PM
