In Trivial Pursuit: A Preview of Tonight’s Trivia Night

Student council will be hosting a trivia night tonight from 6:30-8:30 in the cafeteria.

Students have been forming teams of five, some have even asked a teacher to sponsor them though it’s not required, and will pay a fee of $5 per person or $25 per team.

During the eight different categories — ranging from geography to East history — members will fill out their answer sheets then turn it into the members of StuCo’s special events committee, who will then mark the response as correct or incorrect.

“After each round, you turn in your slip of paper with each question, and we move on to the next round,” committee chair and junior Abi Limbird said. “And periodically we’ll do some scorekeeping and keep a leaderboard of who’s in the lead.”

Half of the money raised from the event is divided among winners in the form of gift cards. The other half is donated to an organization of the team’s choosing.

Some organizations being considered are Operation Breakthrough, KC Pet Project and the Trevor Project, according to Brenda Fishman, social studies teacher and committee supervisor.

While some participate for the monetary prize others do it simply to have fun with friends outside of school. Teams are encouraged to dress up in costumes, with a prize being awarded to the team with the best costume.

History teacher Shannon Nolan has participated in the event for the past three years as a teacher sponsor. This year she is sponsoring a new group and remembers her team’s costumes from last year.

“Last year I showed up and my [team] told me that we were going to dress up as Vin Diesel and they bought me a bald cap,” Nolan said. “So that was a nice surprise.”

While others simply participate for fun and to contribute to a charitable cause, other students are in it to win it. Junior Autumn Sun is confident in her team’s abilities and smarts and believes they have a chance of winning.

“I think it’s gonna be pretty competitive,” Sun said. “And I think we’re gonna be pretty serious about it.”

According to Nolan the event gets very competitive, with a lot of cheering and enthusiasm.

“All of the groups are always chanting and yelling, and there’s always a competition of who has the best costume and who has the most spirit and who’s the most enthusiastic,” Nolan said.
