Head Football Coach Wins Coach of the Year

A month after East Football Coach John Sherman was selected as the High School Coach of the Week, Sherman was announced as the Kansas City Chiefs High School coach of the year.

In addition to winning the title, the Chiefs Children’s Fund donated $1000 to East athletics. The football team also visited Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 30, which included a private tour and a meeting with current Chiefs players as well as players from the Chiefs 1970 Superbowl Championship team.

According to Sherman, the $500 dollars East received for his Coach of the Week award did not go to the football team. If the All-Sports Booster Club gives this new grant to the football team, Sherman plans on using the money to purchase new weight lifting equipment, or new equipment for the players.

Sherman led East to an 8-2 season, becoming both the Kansas District 2 Champion and the Conference Champions. The football team ended the season with a 24-28 loss to Olathe South in the first post-season game.

Even with taking a day off at Arrowhead to enjoy the rewards of East’s success this year, Sherman is already looking towards next year.

“We have some big question marks for next season. We’re losing some seniors and have to find kids to replace them.” Sherman said.
