Go Green or Go Home: Dove and Ziploc release new eco-friendly versions of select products

Dove and Ziploc recently released new, eco-friendly versions of their most well-known products: deodorant and plastic bags.

In January, Dove launched their first ever refillable and reusable deodorant as an indication of their commitment to helping reduce global plastic waste. Made up of a durable stainless steel case with refills sold separately, it’s advertised as a deodorant that you can “buy once, refill for life.”

According to Dove, the refillable deodorant is inspired by the idea of buying items made to last a lifetime, aimed at combatting "disposable" culture. 

Senior and Youth Against Climate Change club co-president Violet Apodaca believes this attempt at sustainability is misleading. Apodaca accuses Dove of greenwashing, or giving an unsupported claim to convince customers that a company's products are environmentally friendly.

“It’s deceiving to the consumer because they think they’re doing something that’s better for the planet,” Apodaca said. “But then there’s so much packaging on the refills that it’s not much better.” 

On the other hand, Apodaca feels that Ziploc’s new recyclable paper bags, released in February, are a step in the right direction. They’re food safe, resealable and their non-wax formula makes them 100% recyclable. The sandwich-sized bags also feature playful designs and cute stickers, making them perfect for an after school snack.

“They’re better than plastic bags because you can compost paper, and even if you don’t compost, they’re biodegradable,” Apodaca said. “But I still always think the best choice is something you can reuse more than once.”

Apodaca believes Ziploc’s recyclable paper bags and Dove’s refillable deodorant were most likely released for the good press that would be sure to follow.

“I don’t think those particular companies are really making a long-lasting commitment towards the environment,” Apodaca said.
