Girls varsity tennis State recap

The East girls varsity tennis team competed in State at the College Boulevard Activity Center this weekend, placing first overall. The team advanced to state after winning regionals last weekend at Mill Valley.

Coached by Andy Gibbs, six players went to state — senior Allison Wilcox, junior Bridget Epstein, sophomores Bryson Langford and Greta Stechschulte and freshmen Katie Schmidt and Abigail Long.

The doubles and singles tournaments took place all day Friday and the official championship ceremony was held Saturday afternoon, where the East girls were dubbed as champions.

According to Long, who attended her first-ever State with East this weekend, the team was hopeful about their chances.

“I was super nervous going in because the other teams were so good,” Long said. “But we all played really well. Even before going into the State finals, we had a lot of points from regionals and that helped us a ton.”
