Girls Varsity Soccer Updates

Current Placement

  • Following its most recent 6-0 win over Olathe West at College Boulevard Athletic Complex on Tuesday, April 21, the girls varsity soccer team is tied for 1st in the Sunflower League. SM East is tied with Mill Valley, both with records of 5-0-1.
  • SM East varsity soccer is first in the Class 6A East Regional Season. The team has a record of 8-0-1, with 30 goals for and only two goals against. The team has the most seed points of all 19 teams in the East region with 0.944 points.
  • The second-place team in the Class 6A East Regional Season is BV Northwest, with a record of 8-1-0 and seed points of 0.889.

Top Performers

  • Junior Mia Mosher is the top goal scorer for the team. The second top goal scorer is junior Lauren Mercer.
  • “It’s been super fun playing for East, especially getting to hang out with all the girls and it’s been really fun with how well we’ve been doing,” Mosher said. “I’m very grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to get to play with all these girls.”
  • Goalkeepers junior Bella Tilgner and senior Stella Beaver have kept a clean sheet for eight games and have only had two goals scored against them.
  • “I’m very proud of the team,” Tilgner said. “I think we’ve worked really hard so far and we’ve proved how hard we can work and how well we play as a team together this season.”

Upcoming Competitions

  • According to varsity boys and girls Head Coach Jamie Kelly, the team will not face any more unbeatable competition for the rest of the Sunflower League regular season games.
  • The team will face Lawrence Free State on Thursday, April 23. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Lawrence Free State.
  • “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Tilgner said. “I think we will be very competitive. I think hopefully we can make it through the rest of the playoffs undefeated and then hopefully we can just be really super competitive in the playoffs.”

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • For the past two years, the team hasn’t made it past the Regional Final game during playoffs. Meaning the team has lost in the second round of playoffs. Its season has ended by Mill Valley in 2024 and Olathe Northwest in 2025.
  • Factors like prom, spring break and bad weather have canceled practices and messed up the consistency of the practices.
  • The team struggles at times to play as a team and act too selfishly with the ball, according to junior Bella Tilgner.

Injuries

  • Senior captain Sophie Danker didn’t start the previous game against Olathe West due to her absence from practice the day before from a sickness. Despite this, once Danker went into the game, she didn’t come out to sub for the remainder of the game. Danker will be back to starting for the next game.

Other

  • This week was a week the girls team did “Rally Girls.” For “Rally Girls,” the captains assign partners, sometimes a group of three, and each girl will get a gift for their partner and exchange the gifts before a game that week. Gifts have to be around $15, and some gifts include funny shirts to be worn for Friday practices, snacks, energy drinks and NeeDohs.
