Girls Varsity Soccer Updates: The team starts of their season

After the first Sunflower League game, the girls varsity soccer team is ranked 12th in the Sunflower District. However, they won the Olathe Northwest Invitational Tournament on April 2 and 4.

Top Performance

Junior Mia Mosher is a new addition to the team this year. Mosher is committed to play at Ole’ Miss.

“[Mia Mosher] works really hard and you can tell she really cares about the sport,” Beedle said. Mosher is the leading scorer from the Olathe Northwest Invitational Tournament this previous weekend with three goals across three games.

Freshman Jane Beedle is another hard worker, according to Coach Kelly. She missed tryouts due to the end of her club season, and began the season on JV, but was eventually pulled up to varsity for the Olathe Northwest Invitational Tournament.

Upcoming Competitions

The team will play Gardner Edgerton on April 9. They are looking forward to the game and will play their rival, Mill Valley High School, on April 12.

Strengths & Weaknesses

The athletes are close this year because of the activities they share as a team off the field. Beedle explained that in order to have a close team, they have bonding activities like parties and after-practice meals, which help connect the team. Another strength is that all of the starting defenders are returning seniors, according to Head Coach Jamie Kelly. Their second-half subs are also seniors with a lot of experience.

According to defender and senior Mak Terril, one of the team's weaknesses is communication, especially with the lineup change for this season. 

“Some girls don’t really speak up, while others communicate frequently,” Terril said. She explained that the team is working hard on communication during practice.

Injuries:

During the first game of the Olathe West tournament, senior Lauren Mercer was knocked over and injured her shoulder. She is now looking for a diagnosis. She is currently playing non-contact in practice.

Lineup Changes:

The forwards are freshman Stella Harris, sophomore Violet Casey and senior Louisa Holzbeierlein. The starting midfielders are junior Mia Mosher, senior Addison Stover and junior Addy Newman. The starting defenders are seniors Kate Lucas, Luciana Mendy, Sophie Danker and Mak Terril. This was the starting lineup for the Olathe Northwest Invitational Tournament and will be the starting lineup going into general Sunflower League play on April 7.
