Ginger Sue’s Review

I’m a five minute walk from First Watch, two if I drive. It’s my go-to on a Saturday morningI’ve practically memorized the menu to the point where I don’t even need a menu — I know that I’m going to order the “secret” fresh fruit crepes. When I needed a change of pace from asking my waiter for the muffin of the day, I decided to check out Ginger Sue’s, which recently opened near my house.

Situated right next to Gus’ Fried Chicken and a short walk from Kansas City Joe’s, Ginger Sues’ plain red sign appeared bland compared to the brightly decorated Taco Republic right down the street, but walking in was a different story. The red accented wall added a pop of color while the light up letters “G” and “S” hanging over the bar area brightened the room. Besides the illuminating decorations, the spacious inside was filled with wooden tables and cushion-covered booths.

The booth I was seated in was tucked away and cozy. And it was near the entrance so I was able to watch the steady flow of people come and go, reinforcing the idea that I had chosen the right breakfast spot. The “don’t be crabby” crab omelette, apple cinnamon pancakes and cajun crepe all stood out to me but I settled on the build-your-own-omelette complete with sausage, mushrooms and cheddar-jack cheese.

I’m more of a vanilla latte kind of girl, but waiting for my omelette, I decided to expand my taste palette and try their mocha. And boy, am I glad. The cereal bowl-sized coffee cup was filled to the brim with a drink that tasted more like hot chocolate than actual coffee. It was made even sweeter by the dollop of whipped cream on the top.

The waitress seemed to be able to read my mind because as soon as I downed my mocha, my omelette was served. While smothered in cheese on the outside, the inside was crammed with soft mushrooms, crispy sausage and stringy cheese. In addition to the omelet, there was a biscuit and side of potatoes on my plate. To balance out the savoriness of the omelet, I doused my biscuit in butter and strawberry jam. The buttery inside paired well with the flaky exterior. The only downside of my otherwise tasty plate were the overly seasoned potatoes, which tasted as if someone had gone a little crazy with the salt shaker.

My total came out to be $12, which was a steal considering I had leftovers for breakfast the next day due to the gigantic portions. Even though my order is around the same price at First Watch, I usually don’t have leftover crepes. My filling omelette and sugary mocha made up for the heavily seasoned potatoes and I left knowing that next Saturday morning I would head for Ginger Sue’s, not First Watch.
