Gallery: Shawnee Mission East Class of 2020 Graduation

On Tuesday July 14th, 2020, Shawnee Mission East senior parents held a graduation ceremony at Boulevard Drive-In theater after the Shawnee Mission School District canceled in-person graduation ceremonies that had been postponed in the spring amid the coronavirus pandemic. Student body President, Eva Hill, understood why the district needed to cancel but was still disappointed. Per state and local guidelines masks were required for anyone outside of their car. When asked about how safe she felt from COVID-19 at the makeshift ceremony Hill said, “If you wanted to separate yourself from a group and be very protective you were free to. There was nothing explicitly making it more dangerous.” Even though it wasn’t the normal celebration everyone plans for since freshman year, Hill was still glad to have some form of celebration and to see all of her classmates in person.
