Aug. 16, 2023

Junior Vici Beer took a deep breath before her first day at a new school. Her lock screen was set to her schedule and she had a map of East ready to direct her during the day. Junior Emma Culp, her host sister, turned into the crowded parking lot where Vici made her way to her first hour, Spanish.

“I was sitting outside at the tables and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is so much to take in right now,’” Vici said. “I immediately texted my German parents and I was like ‘There’s so many new people over here and I walked out in the hallway, there’s like 5000 new faces.’”

The girls C team soccer game against Olathe West w

The girls C team soccer game against Olathe West was a close game. After having a rough start in the first half due the the wind going against them, East was able to have more chances on goal during the second half. Most of East’s possession in the first half was in the middle and defensive thirds. In the second half, East held more possession than they did in the first half. East was unable to finish their chances resulting in the game being 0-0. The girls C team has only lost one season game, which was against Mill Valley High School, tied one game against Olathe West High School and have mercy ruled the remaining teams that they have played. Early in the season during the third practice for C team, four girls got injured. These injuries included a severely sprained ankle, a torn ncl, a concussion and a torn acl. This did not reflect on their playing as the the girls C team has scored a total of 63 goals so far in this season, and have only let in five goals.

After two months of preparation, the Multicultural

After two months of preparation, the Multicultural Student Union hosted the Multicultural Fair during seminar on Tuesday, April 23 alongside SM West’s Latinos of Tomorrow, who performed a traditional fast-paced dance, and the SM East Chinese Club, who performed a dragon dance. MCSU hosted the fair to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of the East community and expose the student body to global cultures.

As a kid, classic Nickelodeon shows like “iCarly” and “Zoey 101” were a staple in my day-to-day life. So, when I recently watched “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” — a new docu-series on Hulu and HBO Max highlighting the toxic culture on the sets of Nickelodeon shows from the early 2000s — I questioned the working conditions of shows that were the foundation of my tween upbringing.

“Quiet on Set” delivers a shockingly heartbreaking truth about the TV shows every Nickelodeon kid grew up binge-watching.

Each time I sit down to eat a meal during a day of

Each time I sit down to eat a meal during a day of shopping with my friends or to celebrate a family member’s birthday, rather than feeling excited, I’m filled with anxiety. Even with the most vast menu I’m unlikely to find a single entree I’m able to eat as the rest of my table carelessly orders all my old favorite foods — pizza, ice cream or french fries.

Mentally, I prepare myself for a slew of convoluted customizations for the waiter and a warning that they can’t promise there won’t be cross-contamination.

As a self-acclaimed foodie, when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in January, the first thing I thought of was the dreaded dietary restrictions that were sure to come with it. Somehow I still underestimated them — no dairy, gluten, sugar or processed foods.

For the first time in 10 years, East will have an

For the first time in 10 years, East will have an all-female Student Council Executive Board for the 2024-25 school year.

The board consists of future senior and president Ingrid Blacketer, future junior and vice president Paige Bean, future junior and secretary Claire Polanco and future junior and treasurer Fina Kessler.

“We see each other once a week every week,” Blacketer said. “We set up together, we volunteer together and we volunteered at the can drive together. So we’ve always been in the same room [and] we’ve known each other for over a year now.”

Sitting in World Regional Studies class after finishing my map of Southeast Asia, I scrolled through my Instagram feed when Alix Earle’s most recent Coachella post popped up on my feed.

I jumped and looked around to see if anyone around me had seen what had just scarred me.

It was a picture of Earle in a white baby tee with printed block letters saying, “Do my boobs look big in this?” This picture, along with the rest of her insanely unhinged feed, was what made me hit unfollow on her account.

In every presidential election, there are campaign

In every presidential election, there are campaign promises that are made, but then are immediately forgotten as soon as the candidate is elected. In the case of President Joe Biden and student loans, it’s pitiful.

The idea of forgiving student loan debt is a great idea — it would help many struggling Americans, but when you don’t follow through with an idea, that’s all it is — an idea.

Junior Maggie Condon anxiously awaited the announc

Junior Maggie Condon anxiously awaited the announcement for the 2024-25 Pep Club Executives. She had a gut feeling that if it was going to be any day it would be on March 21. Maggie looked through her bedroom window and saw the current pep exec’s car outside. She excitedly waited for them to burst into the room playing loud music, announcing her new position.

Then she heard the beep of her alarm. It was just a dream.

Maggie pressed snooze for 10 more minutes of sleep and rolled back over, convinced she didn’t get the position.

Suddenly rave music blasted throughout the room as 10 people filed in — the current pep execs and the rest of her class’s execs for next year.

Walking down the Columbia Blue halls on her first

Walking down the Columbia Blue halls on her first day as assistant principal in 2016, Dr. Susan Leonard lagged behind her new boss, then-principal Dr. John McKinney.

Coming fresh off a head principal position at the 300-student, private Pembroke Hill Middle School, Susan was not prepared for the confusion that came with maneuvering five different floors and almost 2,000 students.

Turning back in the direction of the office, John said, “Now, we’re obviously back at the main office.” But a confused Susan turned the wrong way and bumped into him.

Awkwardness plagued Susan as she realized she practically hugged her new boss on her first day on the job — definitely not how Susan wanted to start her career at East.

But after eight years of successfully finding the main office every day and working to create a sense of community at East through her positive attitude and establishing the Women in Leadership club, Susan has decided to leave East to pursue a new job — potentially outside of education.

Girls swim and dive has a meet today against Shawnee Mission South at Shawnee Mission Aquatic center at 3 P.M. The senior swimmers and drivers will be recognized after the 50 freestyle event.
