Forest elephant vs honey bee. Most people would say that the elephant has the easy victory in this situation but Junior Mallory Wilkerson decided to take the risk and side with the bee for one of the first rounds in the biology class March Mammals Madness competition.

The honey bee created an upset by not only beating the elephant in the first round but also defeating the Flame Bowerbird in the second round of the animal tournament. Wilkerson ended up winning the tournament in her IB Biology class with 82 points out of the possible perfect bracket 128.

“I did get into it and I looked up every single animal, and the how the weird battlefields worked or whatever the habitat was,” Wilkerson said. “Most of it was just applying some logic but [the March Mammal Madness tournament] was a fun and easy way to get some extra credit.”

Senior Mary Long dug her teal shoes into the grass — positioning herself to jog a lap around the field. Her hair and red jersey waved as her jog turned into a run.

She couldn’t help taking a victory lap around the newly built Kansas City Current stadium. It was her first time seeing the fully completed stadium and she was ecstatic.

Her victory lap ended as she met up with her family and prepared to take pictures in front of their accomplishment — the world’s first stadium dedicated solely to a women’s sport.

Boys Varsity Baseball Defeats SM South 5-3

Shawnee Mission South was first to get on the scoreboard after scoring two runs in the second inning but that wasn’t enough to beat the Lancers. With doubles from junior Kyler Schuessler and senior Scotty Fegen, the Lancers defeated Shawnee Mission South 5-3 on Monday, April 15. The varsity baseball team has now won nine games this year.

The “East Chant” or also known as the “Vikin

The “East Chant” or also known as the “Viking Chant” has been passed down to underclassmen band members for years. At the pep rally on April 11, senior Dylan Levitan passed down the tradition to Sophomore Dexter Stephens.

“Around that time we were struggling as a school to bring unity between all the student support groups at home games,” Band Teacher Alex Toepfer said. “When the student section started doing the Viking chant with Syd and the big Bass Drum, combined with an arrangement of 7 nation army I wrote out for the band, it really clicked and quickly became a tradition, and I feel like it's helped create a really positive, unifying, and fun atmosphere for our home games.”

The Lancer Dancers ended their season with their annual spring show on April 11, saying goodbye to their four seniors Bella Hakes, Laynie Manning, Marin McElhinney and Liv Noble. The show started with a group performance to “Somebody to Love” by Queen featuring both JV and varsity dance teams. A total of 18 dances were performed by the JV and varsity Lancer Dancers, including a performance by the Mancer Dancers after intermission. The night ended with a group performance by the four seniors and a video montage of their final season.

I’m a total sucker for pastries, especially ones

I’m a total sucker for pastries, especially ones with delicious chocolate or vanilla fillings. So when Venezuelan-inspired local Kukiss Bakery popped up on my Instagram explore page with a flaky hazelnut croissant stuffed with hazelnut filling, I immediately saved the post so I could go try the treats for myself.

The website’s menu has three pages filled with a variety of cookies, bread and other pastries. I picked out three croissants that caught my eye — either through its described flavors or appealing visuals. The bakery only accepts online orders where a customer selects a time to pick up their items from Kukiss’s home bakery in Overland Park. Orders are ready for pickup within a day of being placed.

The Girl’s swim and dive team placed 1st, scorin

The Girl’s swim and dive team placed 1st, scoring 206 points, at a meet on April 9th. The Lancers competed against Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West. Out of the meet’s 12 events, Shawnee Mission East placed first in 11. Senior Riley Scott placed first in dive scoring 220 points and senior Claire Goettsch followed Scott scoring 184 points.
