Gallery: Junior IB English Makes Sushi

After reading the Japanese translation “The Sound of Waves” by Yukio Mishima, juniors in Ms. Anderson’s IB English class roll sushi to accompany cultural studies of the novel. Ms. Anderson has put effort into immersing her students in cultural experiences while in the classroom. Anderson has provided matcha powder and tea daily and brought a selection of Japanese candies along with making sushi. Using a rice cooker, juniors first mixed traditional rice with rice vinegar. Next, they spread an even layer of sushi rice onto a seaweed sheet. A selection of fillings was provided for students to fill their roll with. A bamboo mat was used to carefully roll sushi before cutting with a sharp knife. This was many students’ first taste of sushi, providing a unique experience to immerse into the culture of the novel, which takes place on a fishing island off the coast of Japan.

Photo Editor Macy Crosser believes there is no better way to spend her senior year than capturing photos or proofing captions in the J-room for Harbinger! If you can’t reach her (and you probably won’t), Crosser is either at drill team choreo, Kansas City Ballet, AP and IB classes, NHS Service chair meetings, TCP President duties or at dive team. Good luck finding her! In any spare time she has, there is a good chance she’s watching the sunset while listening to Taylor Swift, Celsius in hand. »
