Sitting down in my freshman year Journalism 1 clas

Sitting down in my freshman year Journalism 1 class, I spent five agonizing minutes trying to get the courage to walk over to Tate’s desk. Finally, I approached him and asked — with a shaking voice — if he could look over my story.

As he read it, he harshly pointed out every flaw. The lead was cliche. My interviews were boring. The story had no focus. After three minutes of him tearing apart the story I had spent two weeks writing, I squeaked out a “thank you” with tears forming in my eyes and asked if I could go to the bathroom.

I immediately broke down crying.

When my mom picked me up from school that day, I told her I wasn’t going to do journalism next year. Clearly I wasn’t cut out for the whole Harbinger thing. It wasn’t until she forced me to call a former staff member, who told me about how she loved deadlines and her fellow staff members, that I decided to give it a try.

The Sophomore StuCo flag football tournament took

The Sophomore StuCo flag football tournament took place on April 28 — raising money to create connections within the sophomore class. The tournament cost $10 and all the proceeds went to the winning team.

The winning team, “Team 1,” raised $80 and consisted of sophomores Eric Schlote, Jack Reeves, Mete Ozkan, Linus Mai and Vince Kopp.

The flag football tournament was a single-elimination game that had a turnout of around 55 students and eight teams, according to sophomore StuCo representative and member of the school flag football league Georgia Boyd. Around 55 students and eight teams attended.

The seniors had their senior sunrise on April 26. The seniors wore sweatshirts and t-shirts representing their future colleges while eating Chick-Fil-A breakfast sandwiches.

After the game concluded at the end of the fifth inning due to a rain delay, the Lancers defeated Olathe South 6-0 on Tuesday, April 30. Senior John Mendy hit a double bringing in juniors Cole Chinnock and Kyler Schuessler to advance the score by two, senior Luke Hull then hit a single bringing in John Mendy to celebrate with his teammates in the dugout. The Lancers now have an overall record of 14-8.

Varsity girls lacrosse held their senior night on

Varsity girls lacrosse held their senior night on Monday, April 29. Prior to their game against Park, the team honored their 11 seniors: Aanya Bansal, Nora Friskel, Kate Kostner, Abby Lee, Abigail Long, Liv Madden, Lauren McGuire, Jordan Pindell, Claire Schudy, Olivia Tuttle, Caroline Reiser and Ashley Zastrow. Team captain Claire Schudy started in goal for the first and last time of the season after being out due to an ACL injury — being approved by her doctor for only her senior night game. The top scorer was senior Abigail Long with six goals, followed by senior Lauren McGuire with four goals.
Girls Lacrosse will play their final home game on Friday, May 3 against against St. Teresa’s. Junior varsity will play at 6:30 p.m. and varsity will play at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be at Westridge Middle School.
