Gallery: Girls Varsity Lacrosse falls to St. James Academy 14-13

With one minute left in overtime, the Shawnee Mission girls lacrosse team lost their season opener against the St. James Academy Thunder. The SM girls team was the runner-up in the Kansas City Metro Girls Lacrosse Championship last season, with a final record of 11-2. The game started with freshman Hadley Delaney losing the draw. At the end of the first quarter SM was up 3-0. At half-time the SM girls were still up 5-3, maintaining possession of the ball. At the end of the third quarter St. James trailed behind SM 10-9, losing majority possession of the ball. With 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Mill Valley senior Riley Thomas scored a goal, making the score 13-13. Thomas was the top scorer of the game, scoring six goals. The game soon went into overtime, and with a minute left the Thunder scored, making the final score 14-13.

The next varsity SM girls lacrosse game is on Thursday, March 26 vs. Notre Dame de Sion High School at 7:30 p.m at the Shawnee Mission District Soccer Complex.
