Gallery: Gentrification in Kansas City

Gentrification; noun  gen·tri·fi·ca·tion  \ ˌjen-trə-fə-ˈkā-shən \
the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents- Merriam Webster Dictionary. Basically, gentrification means “improvement” of urban neighborhoods by outsiders of the area increasing property and real estate value consequently driving out the original members of the community.

Students in Mr. Muhammad’s economics class were given a project to go to go to areas of downtown Kansas City where gentrification is prominent. Student’s went to Troost, Union Hill, and Beacon Hill and briefly interviewed people they passed on the streets.
