In every presidential election, there are campaign promises that are made, but then are immediately forgotten as soon as the candidate is elected. In the case of President Joe Biden and student loans, it’s pitiful.

The idea of forgiving student loan debt is a great idea — it would help many struggling Americans, but when you don’t follow through with an idea, that’s all it is — an idea.

Junior Maggie Condon anxiously awaited the announcement for the 2024-25 Pep Club Executives. She had a gut feeling that if it was going to be any day it would be on March 21. Maggie looked through her bedroom window and saw the current pep exec’s car outside. She excitedly waited for them to burst into the room playing loud music, announcing her new position.

Then she heard the beep of her alarm. It was just a dream.

Maggie pressed snooze for 10 more minutes of sleep and rolled back over, convinced she didn’t get the position.

Suddenly rave music blasted throughout the room as 10 people filed in — the current pep execs and the rest of her class’s execs for next year.

Walking down the Columbia Blue halls on her first day as assistant principal in 2016, Dr. Susan Leonard lagged behind her new boss, then-principal Dr. John McKinney.

Coming fresh off a head principal position at the 300-student, private Pembroke Hill Middle School, Susan was not prepared for the confusion that came with maneuvering five different floors and almost 2,000 students.

Turning back in the direction of the office, John said, “Now, we’re obviously back at the main office.” But a confused Susan turned the wrong way and bumped into him.

Awkwardness plagued Susan as she realized she practically hugged her new boss on her first day on the job — definitely not how Susan wanted to start her career at East.

But after eight years of successfully finding the main office every day and working to create a sense of community at East through her positive attitude and establishing the Women in Leadership club, Susan has decided to leave East to pursue a new job — potentially outside of education.

Girls swim and dive has a meet today against Shawnee Mission South at Shawnee Mission Aquatic center at 3 P.M. The senior swimmers and drivers will be recognized after the 50 freestyle event.

After filming a “curl my hair with me” video f

After filming a “curl my hair with me” video for her TikTok account on Jan. 29, freshman Audrey Squires went viral, reaching over 4.2 million views and almost 450 thousand likes on her video.

It wasn’t until Audrey woke up the next morning after posting the video on her account, @EverydaywithAudrey, that she noticed the video’s success.

“I just remember being really surprised,” Audrey said. “I woke up and the video had around 100,000 views and throughout the day it kept getting more and more views. And then once every three weeks [the video] will get another 500,000 views, it’s just really crazy.”

Forest elephant vs honey bee. Most people would say that the elephant has the easy victory in this situation but Junior Mallory Wilkerson decided to take the risk and side with the bee for one of the first rounds in the biology class March Mammals Madness competition.

The honey bee created an upset by not only beating the elephant in the first round but also defeating the Flame Bowerbird in the second round of the animal tournament. Wilkerson ended up winning the tournament in her IB Biology class with 82 points out of the possible perfect bracket 128.

“I did get into it and I looked up every single animal, and the how the weird battlefields worked or whatever the habitat was,” Wilkerson said. “Most of it was just applying some logic but [the March Mammal Madness tournament] was a fun and easy way to get some extra credit.”

Senior Mary Long dug her teal shoes into the grass — positioning herself to jog a lap around the field. Her hair and red jersey waved as her jog turned into a run.

She couldn’t help taking a victory lap around the newly built Kansas City Current stadium. It was her first time seeing the fully completed stadium and she was ecstatic.

Her victory lap ended as she met up with her family and prepared to take pictures in front of their accomplishment — the world’s first stadium dedicated solely to a women’s sport.

Boys Varsity Baseball Defeats SM South 5-3

Shawnee Mission South was first to get on the scoreboard after scoring two runs in the second inning but that wasn’t enough to beat the Lancers. With doubles from junior Kyler Schuessler and senior Scotty Fegen, the Lancers defeated Shawnee Mission South 5-3 on Monday, April 15. The varsity baseball team has now won nine games this year.
