Judge Halts Obama’s Immigration Order

U.S. President Obama meets with a group of young undocumented immigrants - DC

An executive order on immigration that President Obama issued last November has been halted by a federal judge. Judge Andrew Hanen has issued a preliminary injunction, which temporarily halts the order’s proceedings, which would have begun on Feb. 18. This means that the U.S. District Court will have to rule on the constitutionality of Obama’s order before it can move forward.

This executive order would have allowed the administration to accept applications for an expanded version of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This program, which was already in effect, allows undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to apply to stay in the country and work legally. The federal government is expected to appeal Hanen’s ruling, but for now, application for DACA are suspended.
