The “East Chant” or also known as the “Vikin

The “East Chant” or also known as the “Viking Chant” has been passed down to underclassmen band members for years. On the pep rally on April 11, senior Dylan Levitan passed down the tradition to Sophomore Dexter Stephens.

“Around that time we were struggling as a school to bring unity between all the student support groups at home games,” Band Teacher Alex Toepfer said. “When the student section started doing the Viking chant with Syd and the big Bass Drum, combined with an arrangement of 7 nation army I wrote out for the band, it really clicked and quickly became a tradition, and I feel like it's helped create a really positive, unifying, and fun atmosphere for our home games.”

The Lancer Dancers ended their season with their annual spring show on April 11, saying goodbye to their four seniors Bella Hakes, Laynie Manning, Marin McElhinney and Liv Noble. The show started with a group performance to “Somebody to Love” by Queen featuring both JV and varsity dance teams. A total of 18 dances were performed by the JV and varsity Lancer Dancers, including a performance by the Mancer Dancers after intermission. The night ended with a group performance by the four seniors and a video montage of their final season.

I’m a total sucker for pastries, especially ones

I’m a total sucker for pastries, especially ones with delicious chocolate or vanilla fillings. So when Venezuelan-inspired local Kukiss Bakery popped up on my Instagram explore page with a flaky hazelnut croissant stuffed with hazelnut filling, I immediately saved the post so I could go try the treats for myself.

The website’s menu has three pages filled with a variety of cookies, bread and other pastries. I picked out three croissants that caught my eye — either through its described flavors or appealing visuals. The bakery only accepts online orders where a customer selects a time to pick up their items from Kukiss’s home bakery in Overland Park. Orders are ready for pickup within a day of being placed.

The Girl’s swim and dive team placed 1st, scorin

The Girl’s swim and dive team placed 1st, scoring 206 points, at a meet on April 9th. The Lancers competed against Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West. Out of the meet’s 12 events, Shawnee Mission East placed first in 11. Senior Riley Scott placed first in dive scoring 220 points and senior Claire Goettsch followed Scott scoring 184 points.

The National Pickleball League added the Kansas Ci

The National Pickleball League added the Kansas City Stingers as a part of a six-team expansion for the 2024 season, adding to Kansas City’s reputation of the “most pickleball obsessed city,” according to offers.bet.

Stingers co-owner and owner of the SW19 pickleball facility on State Line Daryl Wyatt says pickleball’s popularity is displayed by the quantity of facilities and courts around the metro-area.

“It creates a lot of excitement for Kansas City Pickleball and for the club,” Wyatt said.

The annual Sephora Savings Event is a makeup lover’s jackpot, and one of my favorite events of the year.

Until April 15, members of Sephora’s rewards program — which you can sign up for at checkout by giving your phone number — can get anywhere from 10-30% off select products in store, depending on your rewards status.

It’s an excuse for me to wander around Sephora for at least an hour, picking out products that I wouldn’t usually try if they weren’t on sale. Youth and Government Club is holding their annual

Youth and Government Club is holding their annual political panel where local politicians will answer political questions from students in the Little Theatre on April 23 during seminar.

Students will be able to submit questions in advance on a Google form available on the club’s Instagram page, @smeyouthandgov, two weeks before the panel. The Youth and Government Board will decide what questions are chosen based on the frequency of the questions and their relevance to current events, according to YAG co-leader and senior Emma Krause.

“The panel is a pretty unique opportunity,” YAG co-leader and senior Eve Benditt said. “I don’t think anything similar is really offered at other schools [in] Shawnee Mission or otherwise. It’s a really awesome chance for people to have these direct conversations.”

Three TikToks. That’s how many enjoyable clips of funny skits and dancing videos I could watch until a commercial about the upcoming movie “Fall Guy’’ took over my screen. I rolled my eyes and kept on scrolling, three videos later I groaned as an advertisement for Duracell batteries came up.

I remember a couple of years ago there were no ads on TikTok, and I could just spend way too much time watching funny clips and following the latest trends. But as the popularity of TikTok rose, so did the number of ads.

From sponsored posts to influencer endorsements, it seems like there is no escape from the constant stream of advertisements that litter the platform. This over-saturation of ads disrupts the user experience.

Early Bird: Waking up at 6:30 a.m. everyday, however daunting it may sound on Saturdays, always leaves me feeling refreshed and replenished. Much more than staying up until the wee hours of the morning — which always results in waking up closer to noon. I prefer to get an early start to my day.

Night Owl: I do my best work at night.

Whether it’s a 7 a.m. test or 3 p.m. interview, I do my best cramming — I mean planning, at night.

I used to be the kid who was the first to go to bed at sleepovers. That is until high school hit. All of a sudden the hours I spent awake while the rest of my family was winding down or asleep became my favorite part of the day.

First, Roe v. Wade was overturned. Now, frozen embryos count as children — according to the Alabama Supreme Court — and presidential candidate Donald Trump has been closing rallies with 15-minute prayer-like sermons.

One common thread connects these political events: the evident rise and influence of Christian nationalist beliefs in politics.

The recent rise of Christian nationalism in politics needs to be quelled before it upends core American values of equality and diversity or distorts society into operating under a Christian belief system for generations to come.

Shifting in your seat, you discreetly text your friends a plea for help mid-class. Your period came early, and you just weren’t prepared. None of your friends have a pad or tampon you could use, so you’re forced to craft something with toilet paper or fill out a nurse’s pass, leaving you in discomfort until the nurse is able to see you or walk around for the rest of the day with toilet paper shedding over your newly-stained underwear.

Students have to do all of this just because your school doesn’t stock the bathroom with essential period products, free of charge.

Menstrual products should be present in all of East’s bathrooms free of charge, providing hygienic products to students so they can learn and feel comfortable at school.
