Construction Chaos: Due to months of closures on Mission Road, students have been struggling with the inconsistency of road construction

There are multiple new sites of construction on Mission Road from 79th to 83rd and 127th to 135th. The City of Prairie Village has been reconstructing Mission Road since Oct. 14. Fixtures in the road are estimated to last until October of 2024 according to the Blue Valley Post.

The project’s focus is to eliminate potholes and breaks in the pavement for a consistent road surface. In addition, the Evergy construction project will take place between 79th Street. and 83rd Street.

Road closures in construction zones have affected many students, such as junior Audrey Tompkins who now struggles to get from school and sports easily.

“Because I live off of Mission Road, it is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get to and from school, sports and more,” Tompkins said. “With the construction I find myself making long detours that waste my gas and extend my travel time.”

Junior Hannah Geffert agrees that the new construction hinders her driving.

“My mom works on Mission road so it’s hard to get there if we need anything without going out of the way,” Geffert said.
